Our Promise

Curing Breast Cancer – at Every Stage

At Susan G. Komen for the Cure, we know that

ending breast cancer is about more than curing

a medical condition – it’s about overcoming the

cultural, social and financial conditions that

prevent women from receiving life-saving

breast health care and treatment.

At Komen for the Cure, our promise is our

mission – ending breast cancer forever by:

Empowering people to take charge of their

health care through awareness and early

detection and, if diagnosed, to survive.

Ensuring quality of care for all, regardless of

race, ethnic background, language, income

or insurance status.

Energizing science to find the causes and

cures of breast cancer – and, ultimately, to

prevent breast cancer in the first place.

About Susan G. Komen for the Cure

Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister,

Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in

her power to end breast cancer forever. In

1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen

for the Cure and launched the global breast

cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure

is the world’s largest grassroots network of

breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to

save lives, empower people, ensure quality care

for all and energize science to find the cures.

Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the

Cure, we have invested nearly $1 billion to

fulfill our promise, becoming the largest source

of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight

against breast cancer in the world. For more

information about Susan G. Komen for the

Cure, breast health or breast cancer, visit

Stacking the Odds

Stacking Oreo’s???

You have eaten them, you have dunked them,

you have probably even licked their cream

filling but now it is time to stack them. That’s

right, we are stacking America’s favorite

cookie, Oreo, as high as we can and at the

same time Stacking the Odds against breast

cancer.

Jen DeFazio and Justin A. Harrison, the

founders of Stacking the Odds, came up with

the idea of having a stacking party after seeing

an Oreo stacking event as part of a Relay For

Life event in Hermitage, PA in June of this year.

What started as a simple idea for a small group

of people has quickly grown into a competition

that is attracting competitors throughout

western Pennsylvania and other states.

Jen lost her mother 16 years ago to breast

cancer at the young age of 11. She has

devoted countless hours over the past several

years helping to raise funds and awareness for

breast cancer in the Hermitage region. Justin

lost his grandmother to breast cancer more

than 10 years ago. Unfortunately, their stories

are not unusual or unique as many have lost

loved ones to this dreaded disease. This is why

they have chosen to partner with Susan G.

Komen for the Cure to finally stack the odds

against breast cancer.

The Rules of Stacking

This is a single elimination competition.

Each Round will last for 10 minutes.

Stackers must use a single cookie base to

build their “stack” of Oreos.

Stackers must use the Oreos provided in

the center of each table throughout the

event. You may not bring your own.

Stackers may not modify the Oreo in any

fashion, i.e. no licking and sticking, no

separating the Oreo to use the cream filling

as glue, no nibbling off an edge to create a

more balanced Oreo. If you are unhappy

with the Oreo you have chosen pick

another, we have plenty.

At the end of each round the “stacked out”

totals will be tallied and the top 50% of

stackers in each section will advance.

Stackers will be ranked after each round.

In the event of a tie, a table judge will keep

track of how many times each competitors

stack has fallen in the ten minutes. The

stacker with the fewest number of falls

advances. If a tie still exists a one minute

stack off will take place.

Final round for the top four competitors

will be a 15 minute round. A fall during

this round will result in elimination.

Who can be a stacker?

Anyone can stack Oreos but to be competitive

you may want to practice. We ask three things

of all stackers, 1) a $25 registration fee, 2) a

minimum of $100 in donations or sponsors

and 3) come to the event with lots of energy

and invite your friends.

Stackers can represent a group of people, an

office or a department at a place of business, a

church, or even a loved one who has battled

cancer. We will attempt to match stackers in

the first round with other stackers whom they

are competitive with in the market place. Pick

your best stacker to out stack your competitors

and attempt to raise more money than your

opponent.

All proceeds of Stacking the Odds will

benefit the Pittsburgh Affiliate of Susan

G. Komen for the Cure.
